Welch's: A new ingredient in the Grape Tip-off Tournament

North East, PA, November 1, 1997

For the first time in its eight-year history, the North East Grapepickers' annual Tip-off Basketball Tournament will be sponsored by a major player in the North East community: Welch's. The world's leading marketer of Concord grape-based products will host the renamed tournament, Welch's Grape Tip-off, on November 28-29; the first game will be held at the North East High School gym on Friday, November 28 at 6:00 p.m.

"Welch's has a long and proud history of supporting local people and events," explained Bill Ransom, plant director of Welch's North East plant. "When North East High School approached us as their 'first pick' for sponsorship, we readily accepted because all of the key ingredients were aligned: youth, community and employee participation."

The Welch's Grape Tip-Off Tournament, which helps fund the boys basketball program at North East High School, will include the following teams this year: the North East Grapepickers, the Central Falcons (Erie, Pa.), the Dunkirk High School (Dunkirk, N.Y.), and Bathhurst Heights Secondary School (Toronto).

"With the enlistment of major sponsors, such as Welch's," noted Robert Rhodes, North East High School principal, "this tournament will soon be recognized as one of the premier tournaments in our area."
