Welch's Gift Will Establish Annual Scholarship At Suny College at Fredonia, N.Y.

WESTFIELD, NY (January 31, 1996) - A gift from Welch's to the Fredonia College Foundation will establish two annual scholarships of $1,250 each for the children of the Cooperative's growers and Welch's employees who are attending the State University of New York College at Fredonia, officials of the college and the Cooperative announced today. The first scholarships will be given this spring for the fall semester.

Students who are eligible for the Welch's/National Scholarship are children of employees at the Welch's plants in North East, Pennsylvania, and Westfield, New York, and the Westfield, New York general office, and children of growers who are members of the National Grape Co-operative in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Ontario, Canada.

"Welch's is proud to be able to offer these scholarships to the sons and daughters of its employees in New York and Pennsylvania and the growers in the New York - Pennsylvania - Ohio areas as well as Ontario, Canada," Welch's President and Chief Executive Officer Dan Dillon said. "We believe companies have a responsibility to take part in - and give back to - the communities that they operate in and where their employees, and in our case, our growers, live and work."

"Fredonia and its graduates have long played a critical role in this region's civic and cultural well-being," Mr. Dillon continued. "We're excited to be able to contribute to that tradition."

Welch's Scholarship

Welch's created the endowment to establish two permanent, annual scholarship during the Fredonia College Foundation's recent $5 million campaign, the first capital campaign conducted to benefit the College at Fredonia. Officially concluded, the campaign has raised $5.7 million.

Students interested in applying for the scholarship should contact the human resources manager at the respective Welch's employees sites, or Dave Wells at the national Grape Co-operative office.

A grower co-operative and the leading marketer of Concord grape-based products, Welch's produces grape juice and grape jelly as well as a variety of other high-quality fruit-based products, including the new "White Grape Classics," under both the Welch's and BAMA brand names.

Located in Chautauqua County, the College at Fredonia is a comprehensive, four-year arts and sciences college, which offers undergraduate degrees in more than 55 majors and several graduate degrees. Belonging to the State University of New York system, it has been cited repeatedly for quality and cost-effectiveness by U.S. News & World Report and Money magazine in the annual "best college buys" guides of these periodicals.
