Welch's North East Penn., and Westfield NY Plants Cited for Safety Award NORTH EAST, Penn.(November 22,1996) - Welch's North East and Westfield Plants played key roles in recently helping Welch's win the National Safety Council's Award of Honor. The Safety Council also recognized the North East Plant individually with an Award of Merit. The National Safety Council designed these awards as part of a program to promote the reduction and elimination of occupational injuries and illnesses. Awards are based on significant reductions in incident rates versus prior years and on comparisons to other firms in the same industry. Welch's safety performance in 1995 (the most recent year for which statistics are available) showed significant improvements over the previous three years in three key statistics that measure workplace safety: the recordable-incident rate, the lost-time rate and days-away-from-work rate. Extending that accomplishment, the North East Plant did even better in the recently completed fiscal year achieving the best safety performance in the history of the plant. They also won the company's SAFE award, given annually to the plant with the best safety record. At a plant meeting held on Nov. 20, Welch's CEO and President Dan Dillon presented a plaque to the North East Plant and cited employees for their "outstanding safety record." Representing the employees and receiving the plaque from Dillon were representatives of the Plant Safety Committee. Members of the committee were responsible for leading the improvement efforts at North East. Tom Elitharp is the North East Plant director.
